The owner, Oscar, is incredibly happy to share his best recommendations for exploring Santa Ana and other parts of the country. Although I haven’t personally stayed at Pool House, a solo traveller I trust, Sophie, has, and she had a fantastic experience. It’s conveniently located in one of the villages along the famous flower route, offering a peaceful and scenic environment.
Though there is no kitchen, guests can still enjoy meals at the in-house restaurant. The small balcony adds a charming touch, perfect for relaxing. However, if you’re looking for a social atmosphere, this might not be the place for you, as it leans more toward a quiet retreat than a lively hostel experience.
Papaya Lodge (El Tunco)
I was a little less amused by this hostel, but that could be because El Salvador was still suffering from the corona pandemic during my stay in 2021. However, I still recommend it for its great location and fantastic swimming pool. Among backpackers, this is one of the most popular stays in El Tunco, offering a fun and social environment.
Guests can enjoy the communal kitchen, or if they prefer, they can pay a fee for a delicious breakfast. The outdoor area is well-equipped, featuring sunbeds, multiple seating areas, and good Wi-Fi for those who need to stay connected. Best of all, it’s less than a five-minute walk to the beach, making it a perfect spot for sun lovers and surfers alike.
La Zona Hostel (San Salvador)
This nice hostel is located in a modern neighbourhood in San Salvador, and it even reminded me a bit of the United States. It has a social vibe, making it easy to meet fellow travelers. The shared kitchen is a great place to hang out, and breakfast is served in the morning for a small price, making it a convenient option for budget-conscious guests.
The bunk beds come with privacy curtains, ensuring a comfortable stay. There are large lockers in the room, and the toilets and showers are outside the sleeping area, keeping the space fresh and tidy. The communal setup adds to the welcoming atmosphere, and the safe location with a secure entrance makes it a stress-free choice for travelers looking for a balance between comfort and security.

He even helped travelers like my buddy and me ride to the base of Santa Ana volcano for a thrilling hike. The experience was unforgettable, especially when we reached the crater lake, which turns a stunning turquoise blue under the right conditions.
