Unforgettable One Day in Santa Barbara: Explore & Relax

Spending one day in Santa Barbara is like stepping into a postcard-perfect beach town where the Pacific Ocean meets the San Ynez mountains. The city’s coastal charm, with its warmer air and breathtaking sea views, makes it an unforgettable day trip destination. Whether you’re here for an ultimate adventure or a relaxing getaway, this itinerary will guide you through the best attractions, eateries, and activities.

Begin your day with a delightful breakfast at one of Santa Barbara’s charming restaurants. A hot cup of coffee paired with fresh pastries will set the tone for the day. The town is home to cozy cafes that offer a mix of local flavors, making this morning experience a must.

After breakfast, take a short drive to a nearby trail for an easy hike. Santa Barbara’s proximity to both the mountains and the ocean provides a perfect setting for outdoor adventures. Whether you prefer a scenic coastal walk or a shaded forest path, you’ll find plenty of options to choose from.

Once you’ve enjoyed the fresh air, head back to the city for some cultural exploration. Santa Barbara’s historic charm is evident in its architecture, museums, and local attractions. If the weather is rainy, stop by a museum or visit a winery’s tasting room to sample some of the best wine in town.

For lunch, choose from a variety of eateries offering delicious cuisine. From fresh seafood by the ocean to authentic local dishes, there’s something for every taste. Eating at one of the best restaurants will give you a true taste of Santa Barbara’s food scene.

No day trip here is complete without a visit to the beach. Whether you want to kayak, relax on the sand, or take in the coastal vibe, the sea is the heart of Santa Barbara’s beauty. The beach town atmosphere is perfect for unwinding and soaking in the surroundings.

As the day comes to an ending, head to the waterfront to witness a breathtaking sunset over the Pacific Ocean. The perfect golden hues reflecting off the waves make for an unforgettable moment. If you’re up for more, explore the local area, grab a drink at a winery, or enjoy a cozy dinner by the sea.

While this itinerary offers a great way to spend one day, you’ll soon realize that Santa Barbara has an almost endless list of things to do. A weekend getaway would allow for a more in-depth, culturally immersive experience. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning to your hometown, Santa Barbara always feels like home.

The best part of this day trip is that you can pick and choose the activities that suit you best. Whether you want a full-on adventure filled with hiking, exploring, and kayaking, or a laid-back day of wine tasting and beachside relaxation, Santa Barbara offers something for everyone.

What to Pack for a Santa Barbara Day Trip

No matter what time of year you visit, it’s important to pack wisely. Santa Barbara has temperate weather year-round, with warm, sunny days in spring and summer, and cooler temperatures in fall and winter. Even on a hot day, the air cools down quickly when the sun goes down, so wearing layers is essential for a comfortable trip.

Your Packing List should include shorts, pants, a T-shirt, or a tank top for the day. A lightweight jacket or sweater will keep you warm in the evening. A travel backpack is handy for carrying essentials, and an insulated water bottle will keep your drinks cold. Don’t forget sunglasses and a sun hat (you can find great ones on Amazon or ASOS). If you plan on heading to the beach, bring Coola Sunscreen (available at Ulta), a swimsuit (I love Vitamin A suits!), and a Turkish towel for lounging in the sand.

Get Breakfast and Coffee in Town

A one-day trip to Santa Barbara should always start with a good breakfast and a caffeine boost. Luckily, this town is filled with incredible coffee shops and eateries that offer delicious options to fuel your morning. If you’re looking for a cozy spot,

Cajé Coffee is a great pick. With multiple locations, this coffee shop offers simple yet flavorful items like bagels and avocado toast. Though some might find it pricey (especially if you’re used to LA coffee prices), it’s worth the splurge for a one-time treat. If you’re in the mood for something bold, I highly recommend trying The Burnout—it’s one of their best drinks.

If the weather is nice, I suggest heading to their location at 1316 State Street, where you can relax on their beautiful outdoor patio. But if you prefer a sit-down experience,

Jeannine’s Restaurant & Bakery is another great option. This popular spot serves classic dishes like benedicts, pancakes, and waffles. Plus, if you’re arriving by train, there’s a location within walking distance of the Santa Barbara train station.

For a health-conscious breakfast, Green Table in Downtown Santa Barbara is the way to go. This organic vegetarian café has fantastic options for vegans and vegetarians alike. Their menu includes a variety of delicious choices like a hearty sandwich, fluffy muffins, refreshing smoothies, and creamy matcha lattes.

Coffee and Art in the Funk Zone

If you love exploring unique neighborhoods, the Funk Zone is a must-visit. This artsy area in downtown Santa Barbara is known for its wine tasting, breweries, incredible restaurants, and beautiful murals. It’s one of my favorite areas to grab coffee and enjoy the creative atmosphere.

One standout spot is Dart Coffee Co, which has a charming garden across the street where you can sit at tables and chairs while sipping on a warm drink. Their varied menu features unique drinks like the June Bug Lavender Latte, along with tasty food choices such as empanadas, burritos, and pastries. They also cater to different diets with great vegan options, and best of all, they don’t charge extra for vegan milk!

Another great café here is Helena Avenue Bakery, perfect for brunch or lunch. Their sandwiches are a standout, and you can enjoy them in the outdoor seating area while soaking in the morning sunshine before you move on to your next adventure.

A Quick Stroll and State Street Exploration

If a quiet beach walk isn’t enough to wake you up, take a quick drive down to State Street for some local coffee or a refreshing acai bowl. There’s nothing that feels more SoCal than sipping on micro brew coffee and enjoying fresh fruit in the sunshine.

One of my favorite breakfast joints here is Santa Barbara Roasting Company, located right next to Backyard Bowls. This perfect pair makes it easy to grab a coffee and a delicious smoothie bowl packed with fresh fruit. While I personally go for tea or matcha, my friends absolutely love the rich, flavorful coffee at this spot.

With your breakfast in hand, take a stroll along State Street and appreciate the stunning Spanish-style architecture, which is reminiscent of the area’s cultural history. The city’s roots run deep, with Mission Santa Barbara being a popular stop along the historic El Camino Real, also known as California’s Historic Mission Trail. Today, the street is lined with boutique shops and restaurants, making it a great place to explore.

But don’t lose track of time—your one-day adventure has only just begun! Make sure you’re in the car and on your way to the next activity by 8:45am at the latest.

Start Your Day with an Easy Hike

After a fulfilling breakfast, take a 10-minute drive from Downtown Santa Barbara to enjoy a scenic hike at Arroyo Burro Beach. This peaceful trail, known as the Arroyo Burro Beach Loop, stretches 1.3 miles along a coastal bluff and overlooks the stunning coastline. With its easy route, clear and wide path, and no elevation gain, it’s more of a walk than a challenging hike. Expect to step on bark chips and dirt, so wearing closed-toed shoes is a good idea.

Finding a spot to park is simple, with street parking available near Medcliff Road. The trailhead starts at the corner of Medcliff and Selrose Lane, making it easy to access. As you walk, take in the peaceful ocean views and let the fresh sea breeze wake you up for the adventures ahead.

Explore Cold Spring Trail Loop

If you’re up for a longer hike, continue your one-day Santa Barbara adventure at Cold Spring Trail Loop. This trail is a favorite among locals who love nature, hiking, beach cruising, and boating. Santa Barbara is known for its outdoor activities year-round, and this trail lets you fully embrace the active culture of the area.

Start by parking at the Cold Spring Trailhead and try to arrive by 9:00am to avoid the heat and secure a parking spot. The trail is popular but has limited spots, so an early start is best. You’ll find both moderate and strenuous options, featuring natural springs and breathtaking views over Santa Barbara.

A Rewarding Climb with Ocean Views

The 2.1-mile hiking loop offers a rewarding trek. If you hike clockwise, you’ll stay in the shade while making the climb uphill alongside Cold Spring Creek. Along the way, you’ll pass a small waterfall before reaching a high point, climbing 700 feet, where you’ll get an incredible view. On a clear day, you can even catch a glimpse of the northern Channel Islands—Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, and San Miguel—before you begin descending back to the starting point.

Be mindful of poison oak and heat exhaustion along the way. While poison oak is easy to avoid, the heat can be unpredictable, especially in summer. Carry enough water, and if it’s too hot, cool off in the creek or consider visiting a museum instead. The hike can take quick hikers about an hour, but at your own pace, you should allow around three hours to finish before noon so you can squeeze in more fun activities before the day is up.

Take a Detour to Montecito Hot Springs

If you’re hiking in wintertime, consider adding two miles and 600ish feet of elevation to your route by trekking to Montecito Hot Springs. These hot pools are hidden in the Montecito wilderness and offer a relaxing soak in naturally warm waters. Though the trek is a bit challenging, it’s a cool spot worth checking out.

The springs can get busy, attracting families, dogs, and even occasional nudity. If you’re a quick hiker, you should reach the connector trail by 10:30am. Otherwise, save this experience for your next time visiting.

For the Adventurous: Tangerine Falls Trail

For those who crave an even greater challenge, the Tangerine Falls Trail is an alternative starting from the same trailhead. This hike includes a 1500-foot scramble leading to the base of a 100-foot waterfall. The waterfall flows best after a rainy day, making it an exciting option for experienced hikers looking for an extra thrill.

Visit Old Mission Santa Barbara

After a refreshing hike, head back into town to hang out and explore one of the city’s most treasured landmarks—Old Mission Santa Barbara. Known as the 10th mission built in the state, this historic landmark is a must-see for visitors. The mission is open for self-guided tours, allowing you to explore the interior, including the mission church, mausoleum, cemetery, gardens, and museum. If you want to take the tour, adult tickets cost $15, making it an affordable way to dive into the region’s rich history.

Even if you’re not interested in a tour, the exterior of the building and its surrounding property are worth a visit. Just across the street, you’ll find the Mission Rose Garden, a small garden filled with an abundance of rose varieties, and best of all, it’s free to visit. Parking is convenient, with a large parking lot in front of the mission, as well as additional spots along surrounding neighborhood streets. Before you go, be sure to check the website, as the mission closes for weddings and events at times. If you’re visiting on a Saturday, keep in mind that tours are unavailable from 12:00pm to 2:30pm.

Lunch Santa Barbara

By noon, you’ll likely be hungry—maybe even hangry—after a morning full of exploring. Luckily, Santa Barbara has some awesome spots to choose from when it’s time to refuel. Whether you’re in the mood for Mexican food, a fresh falafel plate, or a gourmet tri-tip sandwich, there’s something for everyone.

If you’re up for a short drive into the heart of Downtown Santa Barbara, you’ll find plenty of great lunch spots. State Street, the main shopping district in town, is packed with options, but a few stand out as must-visit places. One of the top recommendations in this itinerary is the

Santa Barbara Public Market, an indoor food hall with a diverse selection of food vendors.

For those looking for a plant-based meal, Fala Bar is an excellent vegan restaurant known for its falafel burgers, fresh salads, and delicious sandwiches. If you’re craving Mexican food, Corazon Cocina is the perfect place to satisfy your appetite. Their flavorful burritos, tangy ceviche, and refreshing hibiscus tea drinks make for a well-rounded meal.

Another favorite spot is The Daisy, a charming eatery offering fresh, locally sourced meals. Their falafel plate is a standout, and the fries are perfectly crispy. The menu features bowls, sandwiches, and salads, with plenty of options for vegans and vegetarians.

If you’re looking for a more casual experience, Shalhoob’s Funk Zone Patio is known for its famous tri-tip sandwich, which many say is one of the best sandwiches anywhere in Santa Barbara. For Mediterranean flavors, Metropulos Fine Foods Merchant is a quaint grocery market with an extensive and tasty sandwich selection.

For a classic authentic Mexican food experience, El Sitio is a must-visit. It’s a small hole-in-the-wall spot where you can grab street tacos or try the Special #14 Adobado Mixto. Meanwhile, if you want fresh, healthy options, Satellite SB is a farmer-to-table food and wine bar offering a variety of vegan and vegetarian options.

Those who want a quick bite should check out Hana Kitchen, which serves Asian bowls and tacos with plant-based choices. If you need gluten-free options, there are plenty of places in Santa Barbara that cater to dietary restrictions.

Walking Around and Parking Tips

Once you’ve finished lunch, I highly recommend parking your car and exploring the rest of the day on foot. Downtown SB is pedestrian-friendly, with many neighborhood streets and public lots where you can leave your vehicle. A good option is City Lot #3, but if you street park, be sure to pay attention to the street signs so you’re able to park there for an extended time.

As a reference, walking from Downtown Santa Barbara to Stearns Wharf is about a mile long, making it a scenic and enjoyable way to explore. Along the way, you can take in the beautiful Spanish-style architecture, snap photos of the surrounding plants, or stop by a perfect outdoor spot to relax.

My Favorite Santa Barbara Museums

After lunch, take a break and give your legs a chance to rest while you engage your brain at one of the many museums in the Santa Barbara area. These unique museums offer a good sense of the city’s natural and cultural history. Even locals find themselves exploring these local museums again and again! They make a perfect addition to any Santa Barbara day trip, and I personally find that I learn something new every time I go.

One of my top picks is the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, a native plant garden that provides an incredible immersion into California’s diverse ecosystems. This is a great shady outdoor activity for hotter days. A short walk through the native pollinator garden will even lead you to a breathtaking panoramic view of Santa Barbara and the Channel Islands.

For those fascinated by nature and history, the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History is a must-see. It features a giant blue whale skeleton, exhibits covering 10,000 years of Chumash history, and displays of endemic species from the Channel Islands. They even have moving dinosaurs, making it an exciting stop for visitors of all ages.

History lovers will enjoy visiting Old Mission Santa Barbara 1786, a still-practicing piece of the historic Spanish mission system. It offers a glimpse into the past, showing how early settlers lived and worked. The peaceful atmosphere and well-preserved architecture make it a meaningful stop on your journey.

If you’re more interested in the sea, check out the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum for an in-depth look at the city’s historical connection to the ocean environment. This museum showcases Santa Barbara’s long-standing relationship with the sea, from fishing to maritime exploration. After exploring, you’ll be ready for your next active adventure—sunset kayaking!

Explore the Santa Barbara County Courthouse

No day trip to Santa Barbara is complete without a visit to the Santa Barbara County Courthouse, one of the city’s most popular attractions. This 1929 Spanish-Colonial style courthouse is not only a historic landmark but also a fully operational courthouse that welcomes visitors to explore its stunning building for free.

One of the best spots to visit inside is the Clock Tower, where you can enjoy amazing 360-degree views of the city and far beyond. You can either climb the stairs or take the elevator to reach the top. Inside, don’t forget to admire the elaborate murals in the Mural Room and stroll through the Sunken Gardens, a peaceful green space surrounding the courthouse.

If you’re visiting on a weekend, consider joining the free docent-led tour, which starts at 2:00 pm and lasts one hour. The main tourist entrance is under the Great Arch on Anacapa Street, but if you’re visiting during court business hours, be prepared for a security screening before entering.

Shop at State Street

After visiting the courthouse, take a walk down State Street, a lively, palm-tree lined road that runs through the heart of downtown Santa Barbara, eventually leading to the wharf. As you stroll, you’ll notice the beautiful Spanish and Mediterranean-inspired architecture, which gives the area its unique charm. Along the way, you’ll find a mix of antique stores, local shops, hidden gems, and well-known brand-name stores.

For a more unique shopping experience, I highly recommend checking out Urban Flea Market, a spot filled with fun and funky vintage clothes, home decor, vinyl, and other goods. Another great stop is the Italian Pottery Outlet, which is perfect for exploring beautiful kitchenware, ceramics, creative gifts, and home goods.

If you need a caffeine boost or a sweet treat, stop by LOKUM, just a block away from the courthouse. This shop serves authentic Turkish coffee, delicious baklava, and flavorful Turkish delights—the orange and hazelnut delight is a personal favorite! The space is also beautifully decorated, making it a perfect place to relax before continuing your day.

Stroll Down Stearns Wharf

After walking along State Street, continue your journey to Stearns Wharf, a historic landmark that dates back to 1872. Stretching 2300 feet, it holds the title of California’s oldest wharf. As you walk down, you’ll be treated to beautiful views of the ocean and the stunning Santa Barbara coast. The fresh sea breeze and peaceful atmosphere make it a perfect place to pause and take in the surroundings.

Grab Drinks at the Funk Zone

No day in Santa Barbara is complete without a visit to the Funk Zone, the city’s creative center filled with arts, food, and a vibrant wine scene. It’s the perfect place to spend time strolling through the area, where you can check out unique local stores and galleries. If you love shopping, I suggest stopping by The Shopkeepers, a charming clothing and home goods store, or Tendrel, a stylish men’s clothing store.

The Funk Zone is also home to some of the best tasting rooms along Santa Barbara’s Urban Wine Trail, a map showcasing top wineries in the area. Many of these wineries source grapes locally from wine regions like the Santa Ynez Valley, the greater Santa Barbara County, and even Paso Robles.

One of my favorites here is the family-operated Pali Wine Company, known for its cozy outdoor patio. This winery specializes in Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays, using grapes grown in Santa Barbara County. Another great option is The Valley Project, which produces wines from the five distinct viticulture areas in the county. These wineries allow you to truly taste the region without needing to trek up to the vineyards in Santa Ynez Valley, though I’d definitely recommend that for another day!

How to Get Around Santa Barbara

If you’re taking a day trip to Santa Barbara from nearby, the easiest way to explore is by car. Driving is convenient and helps you get around quickly, so you can pack in as many activities as possible. However, once you’re in town, you might want to try other fun ways to move around.

For a more scenic experience, you can rent a bike from Wheel Fun Rentals on Mason Street in the Funk Zone. Opt for electric bikes to speed up transportation between different destinations. The town is bike-friendly, with a beautiful coastal bike trail and State Street, which is closed to cars, making it perfect for cyclists. If you prefer to walk around, most activities and restaurants on this list are within walking distance. But be prepared—you’ll likely hit 10k steps if you only walk!

Ride Bikes Along the Beach

One of the best ways to explore Santa Barbara is by riding along its gorgeous 3-mile bike path that extends from the Andree Clark Bird Refuge to the Santa Barbara Harbor. As you take in the ocean views the entire way, you’ll be passing landmarks like the Chromatic Gate, East Beach, Stearns Wharf, and West Beach. Whether you’re up for a full bike ride or just a short trip, this scenic route is a must.

ride bikes along the beach in santa barbara

If you don’t have a bike, you can rent one from Wheel Fun Rentals, which offers a variety of options, including regular bikes, beach cruisers, electric bikes, and surrey bikes. The surrey bikes are like carriages and allow two or four people to ride and pedal together, making them perfect for a sunny day when you want some shade.

For a shorter bike ride, head to Cabrillo Blvd and start at Stearns Wharf. The paved bike path along the coast takes you on a 1.7-mile round trip to the Santa Barbara Harbor and back. If you want to extend your ride, consider stopping along the way to enjoy the journey. You can even pack beach stuff and take a break at West Beach for some relaxing beach time.

Walk or Bike Around Downtown

The best way to experience downtown Santa Barbara is by exploring State Street, the main street that is lined with shops and restaurants. It’s a great place to walk around and pass the time, especially since large parts of the street are closed to cars. This makes it completely open to pedestrians, bikers, scooters, and skateboarders, creating a lively and relaxed atmosphere.

There are plenty of things to do while strolling through downtown. You can peruse many shops, grab treats and drinks from CAJE Coffee Roasters, or even play chess on a giant chessboard in Paseo Nuevo. For those interested in history and art, you can visit the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, explore the Santa Barbara Courthouse, tour Casa De La Guerra, or check out El Presidio de Santa Bárbara State Historic Park. No matter how you choose to get around, downtown Santa Barbara is full of exciting places to discover.

Relax at the Beach

If you’re looking for the best beaches in the downtown area, head to West Beach or Leadbetter Beach. These large, open beaches are conveniently located along E. Cabrillo Blvd., right next to Stearns Wharf and the Santa Barbara Harbor. They are perfect for a relaxing afternoon since they are near restaurants and have restrooms available. You can easily bike from downtown, drive, or park along the street or in one of the paid parking lots.

Relax at the west Beach in santa barbara

For a more secluded experience, take a 10-15 minute drive to Butterfly Beach, often called the best beach in Santa Barbara. Located in Montecito, an unincorporated area of Santa Barbara County, this upscale beach is known for its peaceful atmosphere and stunning views. Many celebrities have homes nearby, making it a famous but quiet retreat. Keep in mind that there are no bathrooms here, so plan accordingly! If needed, you can stop by Starbucks in downtown Montecito, just a 5-minute drive away, where you’ll find a parking lot and a restroom.

Sunset at Leadbetter Beach after dinner

End your day by enjoying dinner with a sunset view at Shoreline Beach Cafe, which sits right on Leadbetter Beach. Depending on the time and time of year, the sun may set before or while you eat. This beachfront location offers a relaxing atmosphere, making it one of the best places to unwind after a full day of exploring Santa Barbara.

Leadbetter Beach has a large parking lot, so finding a spot is easy whether you’re here for dinner or watching the sunset. The long stretch of sand makes for a lovely place to sit back and take in the view. The park area was recently upgraded in January 2024, featuring new grass and 14 barbeques at each picnic bench site. Some of the best sunsets I’ve ever seen happen here, especially in winter, when Santa Barbara has some of its most beautiful sunsets.

Sunset on the Double Dolphin Cruise

For a romantic and fun way to end your day, hop aboard the Double Dolphin for a breathtaking sunset cruise along the Santa Barbara coast. This experience lets you relax and enjoy the beautiful ocean views while sipping on drinks—both alcoholic and non-alcoholic—and snacking on tasty treats, all available for purchase on board. The catamaran takes off from the Santa Barbara Harbor and sails for a couple of hours, making it a perfect way to unwind.

Sunset on the Double Dolphin Cruise

During the cruise, you’ll likely see sea lions hanging out on buoys, and if you’re lucky, you may even spot dolphins or playful otters in the water. This is a nice way to wrap up an amazing Santa Barbara day trip, and having taken this exact cruise multiple times, I can say it’s always so much fun! Note that the cruise starts at different times depending on the time of year, ranging from 3:15pm to 6pm, to ensure optimal sunset viewing. When booking, be sure to select your date to see the exact start time and plan accordingly.

Sunset Kayak Tour

For a truly peaceful and unforgettable way to end your day, take a sunset kayak tour in Santa Barbara. While locals know that the best local kayaking is found at Channel Islands National Park, you don’t have to go far to enjoy an amazing experience. Paddling along the coastline as the glow of the setting sun reflects off the water is breathtaking. On one side, you’ll see the illuminating Santa Ynez Mountains, and on the other, the silhouette of the Channel Islands stretching across the horizon.

Sunset Kayak Tour

I highly recommend booking a tour with Santa Barbara Adventure Company, as they offer expertly guided sunset tours. These are the perfect way to catch the last bit of light over the harbor and coastline. Since start times vary throughout the year, make sure to prepare and show up at Santa Barbara Harbor two hours prior to sunset. The tour lasts approximately two hours on the water, giving you plenty of time to soak in the stunning ocean views before nightfall.

Where To Stay in Santa Barbara

If you want to turn your day trip into a multi-day trip, this guide will help you decide where to stay in Santa Barbara. There are many great hotel options to book, whether you’re looking for luxury, beachfront views, or something more budget-friendly. You can also search the map to find the perfect spot for your stay.

For a high-end experience, the Best Overall choice is Hotel Californian, while Palihouse Santa Barbara is known as the Best Luxury stay. If you prefer to be near the ocean, the Best Beachfront option is Santa Barbara Inn. Those on a budget can stay at Inn by the Harbor, which is the Best Budget choice, and for something stylish and unique, Riviera Beach House is the Best Boutique hotel. Can’t see the map? End Your Day Trip with Dinner

Finally, finish off your mini Santa Barbara trip with a delicious dinner at one of the city’s amazing restaurants. Whether you want to enjoy a casual beachside meal or a fine dining experience, there are plenty of recommendations to suit your taste.

For a lively atmosphere, head to the Funk Zone, where you can try Loquita, a well-loved Spanish restaurant. Their menu features authentic paellas, including a vegetarian option, alongside flavorful seafood entrees and classic tapas dishes. The beautifully designed space adds to the experience, and their cocktails are a must-try, offering a varied selection of gin and tonics.

Another great option in the Funk Zone is The Lark, a popular, warm, and inviting restaurant specializing in New American fare. Their dishes are made with locally sourced ingredients, and some of the menu highlights include crispy brussel sprouts, oysters, hand-cut pappardelle pasta, fried chicken, and local seafood dishes.

If you’re craving a meal with gorgeous ocean views, Shoreline Beach Cafe is a fantastic choice. You can order from their limited walk-up menu and enjoy a beach picnic, or opt for a sit-down meal at the restaurant with their full menu featuring tacos, fish and chips, burgers, and sides. The outdoor seating is directly on the sand at Leadbetter Beach, allowing you to eat with your feet in the sand while taking in the fresh ocean air.

For a more upscale and fancy dinner, Santa Barbara FisHouse is a top pick. Located across the street from the beach, this spot is just a couple of blocks from Stearns Wharf and is easily walkable if you’re coming from West Beach. While you won’t get direct ocean views, the sight of the palm trees between the street and the beach creates a charming ambiance.

Seafood lovers will enjoy a stop at Santa Barbara Shellfish Company on Stearns Wharf. This is a great place to explore the coast and dive underwater with flavors of locally-sourced seafood. Whether you’re taking a walk down the pier or looking for a quick bite, try their local uni, fried clams, oyster shooters, or steamed mussels before heading out for your last adventure of the day.

Local Tip: If you visit during winter, when the sunset happens earlier, plan to eat dinner after your kayak tour. In the summer, when the sunset is later, consider eating prior to your kayak tour for the best experience.

Congratulations! You’ve officially spent one day in Santa Barbara and had the chance to explore more than most visitors do in an entire weekend. Now, you have a day full of memories and a better idea of where you’d like to dive deeper next time you visit.
